Consistently Inconsistent …

2021 was going to be different … back at the start of the year, when we are full of New year hopes and dreams – I even decided my “word for 2021” was going to actually be CONSISTENT!

Ha! Well that didn’t go to my dreamy plan did it??

I am someone that often has the “know how” with what is good for me or that I want to do … but just suck with the actually doing! Well … doing consistently anyway!

So then comes the question … does it matter if I am not consistent?? A big part of my brain, and a bunch of highly successful people say “yes consistency is the only way to actually make progress” or “consistency is the only way to results” etc etc. But there is still a part of my brain that is perhaps in denial … or neglect …that likes to think “meh, does it really matter if I miss one day”, “seriously who has time for that”, “priorities schmiorities” …

But really … from my up and down attempts at the couch to 5k app for running and various habit change challenges for my nutritional and mental wellbeing … the truth is - I know consistency does make a massive difference! Like a HUGE difference to how I feel – which in turn affects how I behave, react, deal with and enjoy life. Which most importantly then affects those around me, especially those who are most important to me.

But then there is also the times we have to let ourselves off the hook and not think we’ve failed so much. As my beautiful coach Ami says … there is excuses, and then there is reasons …. And as long as you are aware of where the line between them is and you’re honest with yourself on that … then we can forgive ourselves if we haven’t been able to stay as consistent with action towards those goals and habits we wanted to change.

2020 and 2021 certainly have not been normal for anyone – the challenges of disrupted work situations, disrupted social lives, inability to see loved ones, home schooling, loss of income, whatever else COVID has created for us … amongst the normal life issues and challenges that come up has thrown many of us into chaos. Life has certainly been even more of a rollercoaster lately …. And maybe the habit and life changing stuff just needed to get dropped for a while… and that’s okay! We don’t need to be hard on ourselves if things got put on pause for a while … even if we took a few steps backwards… it’s normal and its okay.

But now things are getting back to some sort of normal … whatever the new normal is… the “reasons” may start to be becoming “excuses”. So we have to be careful and start climbing back up those stairs!

Is there some sort of small CONSISTENT steps you can start making again to head in the direction you want to go? Whether that’s for your health, your career, or something to do wih your family or friends?

Even if consistent means once a week or once a month… every little step, every little effort is still closer than nothing at all.

So what do you know deep down you need to get consistent with to make a difference to your life? And more importantly is to work out why does that matter to you? If you don’t know your REAL why then you won’t find a way…

I have quite a few myself … and one is getting back to actually writing this blog more regularly … so I’ll be seeing you again here soon. In the meantime feel free to reach out for a chat about any of this that might resonate with you. xx
